Egyptian has two main ways to say "not": ma-…-sh, which wraps around a verb, and mish, which goes in front of everything else.
ma-…-sh: verbs in the past and present
Put ma- in front of the verb and -sh on the end. If the verb ends in a vowel, the vowel lengthens.
- ما كتبتشma katabtishI didn't write.
- ما بكتبشma baktibshI don't write.
- ما شافوشma shafuushThey didn't see.
ma-…-sh also works with 3and (have) and fii (there is):
- ما عنديش وقتma3andiish wa2tI don't have time.
- مفيش مشكلةmafiish mushkilaThere's no problem.
mish: everything else
Use mish for adjectives, nouns, participles and the future:
- أنا مش تعبانana mish ta3baanI'm not tired.
- ده مش بيتيda mish beetiThis isn't my house.
- مش عايزmish 3aayizI don't want (to).
- مش هروحmish haruu7I won't go.
Negative commands
Commands use ma- + the bare present + -sh:
- ما تقلقشma ti2la2shDon't worry. (to a man)
- ما تقلقيشma ti2la2iishDon't worry. (to a woman)
Never, nothing, nobody
- عمري ما رحت3umri ma ru7tI've never been.
- ما حدش جهma7addish gehNobody came.
- ما قلتش حاجةma 2ultish 7aagaI didn't say anything.
