Moroccan Darija Adjectives: Word Order and Agreement

Adjectives come after the noun and match it in gender, number and "the".

Matching gender

• ولد كبيرweld kbira big boy
• بنت كبيرةbent kbiraa big girl

Matching "the": description vs sentence

If the noun has l-, the adjective takes l- too. Leave it off and you've made a sentence instead.

• الولد الكبيرl-weld l-kbirthe big boy
• الولد كبيرl-weld kbirThe boy is big.

Matching number

People take plural adjectives, often broken plurals:

• ولاد كبارwlad kbarbig children
• ناس مزيانينnas mezyaningood people

Plurals of things usually take the plural or the feminine singular:

• طوموبيلات جدادtomobilat jdadnew cars

Nationality adjectives (-i)

• مغربي / مغربية / مغاربةmeghribi / meghribiya / mgharbaMoroccan (m / f / pl)
